2009 marked the centenary of the Birth of British Aviation here in Leysdown-on-Sea, where the Short Brothers decided to start the world's first factory making aeroplanes, on land adjacent to Muswell Manor (known then as Mussell Manor). That year, JTC Moore Brabazon became the first Britain to fly, in a British-built aircraft, at Shell beach.
In 2010, we remember the life and achievements of Charles Stewart Rolls, who died in 1910.
C S Rolls spent many months at Leysdown, flying, investing in, and inspiring the earliest aviaters and crafts being made by the Short Brothers at their factory in Shellness.
Co-founder of the Aero Club, he chose Muswell Manor as its Headquarters, which became the Royal Aero Club Headquarters in 1910. In June 1910, C S Rolls became the first Englishman to make a return flight across the English Channel.
This year's Leysdown Air Show will be seen across Leysdown-on-Sea, with the best views at the beaches and coastal park. You will see displays by the Tiger Club Stampe Formation team, Kent Spitfire, Kent Para-glider Club, Kent Microlite Club, and a wing-walker, among others! On the ground, see examples of Rolls Royce cars, courtesy of the Rolls Royce Owners Club, take a tethered hot-air balloon ride (fee payable), see birds of prey, and enjoy meeting and chatting to modern-day aviation heroes and historians. Children of Eastchurch Primary School will be creating a huge chalk outline of a plane in the field adjacent to Muswell Manor, and there will be family activities throughout the day. And if all that sounds too energetic, just bring a beach towel and enjoy the view overhead!
